Craft Room Reorganized

My craft room periodically goes through a hoarder phase. It happens because I am lazy when it comes to cleaning and organization, and say things to myself like, “Oh, I just don’t have TIME to take care of this right now!”

It starts when I receive a shipping box filled with packing peanuts, and I walk by and throw it into the room. Then I go to the thrift store and get a big bag of containers that I don’t have room for on my shelves, so I put it in the middle of the floor. I find an old shirt that I don’t want anymore, but could DEFINITELY use to make something—tossed on top of a few boxes it goes! The weekend hits, and I have a craft show. After the craft show, if I don’t just leave all my displays and boxes in the car, I come in and scatter all my show materials all over the floor. This repeats itself over and over for a month or so, and suddenly I have piled the entire room with boxes, packing materials, and random craft supplies, and have carved a small path between the doorway and my shelves of containers. At this point, it’s so overwhelming that I simply don’t have time to take care of it, so the clutter builds and builds until I can’t take it anymore.

With the condition the room is in, it usually takes an all-day cleaning and organization marathon, which is incredibly annoying, but ends up being rewarding. Along with being able to walk freely through the room, I find all kinds of stuff I forgot I even threw onto the heaps!

Fortunately, my craft room is in the totally spotless and clean stage, which is where I intend to keep it. I am done just throwing things all willy-nilly into a room that is supposed to be my little sanctuary! I want to be able to actually access and use what is in there, and be inspired by my surroundings! To further my ability to remain organized, I’m going to take on a few projects that I found on Pinterest.

From Better Homes and Gardens, we have this lovely pegboard organization system. Look how easy it would be to put stuff away! I’m the worst at putting stuff away!
From Country Home, here is an innovative use of pants hangers, which I could use for organizing invoices and receipts. (My inner self just said, “Like you will ever do that!” But I will, inner self! Just you wait!)
Here is another lovely idea from Better Homes and Gardens. I have a cabinet that I could easily do this to. And it would be so nice for its contents to be categorized into neat little labeled baskets instead of jumbled all over the place.
I’m really excited to make these things happen. They WILL happen.

Milton and Margie’s 2012

Hooray for 2012! I would love to get my hands on the beautiful calender above by UrbanBark to start organizing what needs to happen this year. Milton and Margie’s has quite a few exciting plans in the works! I have been super busy co-organizing and expanding the lovely Urban Folk Circuit with my dear Kelli Wefenstette, and Tuesday Bennett of Muggy Tuesday and Heidi Gustad of Hands Occupied have joined to make us a team! Our next event is January 21 at the Grafton Pub, and we hope to kick off the new year with a fabulous show.

As for Milton and Margie’s 2012, here are a few goals:

  • List items on Etsy weekly, YES, weekly! I have been quite a slacker in that department lately. It’s time to pick it back up again.
  • Get in 10 more shops.
  • Post on this here blog once a week.
  • Expand this blog to be my actual website.
  • Design a new banner.
  • Vamp up my displays for craft shows.

I have a few more, but they are special secrets! Get ready for two new lines of candles coming soon, oh la la.

Do Division 2011

The Urban Folk Circuit will present 18 artisans at Do Division, held June 4–June 5 from noon–10 p.m.  Milton and Margie’s will be there slinging candles on Sunday.

Spanning 10 city blocks on Division from Ashland to Leavitt, Do Division features the food, music, local artisans, and family-friendly activities to kick off Chicago’s summer of festivals.

The Urban Folk Circuit will take over three tents packed with lovely local arts and crafts. Come visit the following independent crafters throughout the weekend:

Tack & Jibe: Leland, Michigan

Milton and Margie’s Soy Wax Candles will now be offered at Tack & Jibe, a shop selling local and handmade wares in Leland, Michigan. The shop is owned by an awesome married couple, Peter and Charlotte, who also make canvas and fabric bags offered in their shop. Leland is a very fishing-centric town—it is nicknamed Fishtown—so among a multitude of handmade items, the shop offers a variety of hand-crafted, fishy souvenirs.

Here is one of Tack & Jibe’s zesty bags:

Real Naked Food Grand-Opening Event, April 22

Milton and Margie’s is happy to be stocked at the new natural-foods grocery store Real Naked Food. Real Naked Food is a full-service grocery store located in the Wicker Park area that specializes in mostly unpackaged organic, local, eco-friendly foods and products for the home. They will appropriately be stocking my candles in reused cans!

The grocery store’s mission is to to offer quality local, organic, and natural food alternatives to the unhealthy foods offered in conventional “big box” grocery stores, at competitive price points, as well as decrease the detrimental environmental effects caused by unnecessary food packaging. To reduce waste, Real Naked Food encourages shoppers to bring their own containers and bags, to buy products in bulk, and to buy locally grown products that travel fewer than 180 miles. I  am really excited to be part of what they are doing and to start shopping there on a regular basis.

The store’s grand opening event is 6 p.m. on Friday, April 22 at the store, located at 1909 W. Division St. Milton and Margie’s will be there giving out tea-light samples along with other local artisans and food vendors. See cooking demonstrations by Artfully Delicious and get treats and giveaways from local producers including Nice Cream, Edenic Tofu, Crumb Breads, Sweet Tart Pies, Sol Food Natural Soaps, Surf Sweets Candies, Divine Chocolates and Specialty Pasta.

Urban Folk Circuit: February Market

Have you gotten your significant other anything for Valentine’s Day yet? I haven’t either. For shame! But we have a wonderful last-minute gift-buying opportunity at the Urban Folk Circuit’s February Market noon–5 p.m. on February 13 at Berlin, as there will be 20 or so Chicago artisans (including Milton and Margie’s, of course) waiting to bail you out. Not celebrating? Get something for yourself, then! Or at least enjoy $6 Bloody Marys and free live music from Joey Basketball, The Film Society, Rachel KatzmanFarr, Careful Q, and Tinders.

Time for love!

Urban Folk Circuit :: January Market, Reggie’s Rock Club

I really hope that 2011 will be the jumping-off point for the Urban Folk Circuit (I think that it is safe to assume that Kelli does, too). We have a few exciting potential plans in the works that we hope will thrive (pop-up shop? outdoor fest? other awesome things?). Our first event of the year is this weekend–so, hey! Why don’t you come? There will be nearly 30 Chicago crafters displaying their finest wares, specially for you. Four musicians (Tisa Bachelder, Joey Pastersik, Steve Sebby, and the Jonas Friddle Band) are dying to sing to you. We got super lucky to get picked up for a Yelp sponsorship, so hopefully some avid Yelpers will come and then review us on our page (we currently have zero reviews).

January Market::

Saturday, January 22
Reggie’s Rock Club: 2105 South State Street
Noon–5 p.m.
Free admission

Handmade Market, January 2011

It’s time to get back to making candles for Milton and Margie’s first show of 2011, the Handmade Market. I’ve had a two-week break from making candles, and now I’m rejuvenated and ready to snap back into action. I love doing the Handmade Market shows, so it’s a great way to start the year. I’ve got a little bit of Christmas money left (after my video game purchasing streak for the Kinect), so I think I will have to get me a little something this time around. Come say hi and have a mimosa with me!
